Once you arrive in Hong Kong, exit the airport and follow the signs for taxis. The forecourt is huge, and you’ll find an endless number of taxis running back and forth. Follow the line for the red taxis, which go to the city center. The hostess will ask for your destination and communicate it to the driver. In about 45 minutes you’ll reach your destination. Please note that taxis do not accept credit cards, only cash. If you don’t have Hong Kong dollars, they also accept US dollars and euros.
After a quick check-in at the hotel, you’re ready to go out and explore the city.
Take the bus and reach Central. From here head towards the IFC mall (the tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong) and take a tour of the business district. With your head up, admire the new and old Bank of China skyscraper and the curious HSBC headquarters. The main feature of the HSBC headquarters in Hong Kong is the absence of internal supporting structures: the support pillars are entirely exposed. Another important curiosity is the natural light, which is the primary source of illumination inside the building: huge computer-operated mirrors reflect the sun’s rays from the ceiling of the enormous atrium. The use of natural lighting allows for significant energy savings. For the air conditioning system, seawater is used as a coolant, eliminating the waste of drinking water.
Continue and find the Jardine House skyscraper with its unusual facade made up of countless round windows.
Stroll among the skyscrapers of CitiBank and the ICBC Tower until you reach St John’s Cathedral; the oldest church in Hong Kong.
Next to the cathedral you’ll find the tomb of Ronald Douglas Maxwell, a British soldier killed during the battle of Wan Chai. It has a truly troubled history that eventually ended positively with the authorization to let him rest in peace near the cathedral.
Continue with a nice walk towards the Peak Tram which will take you to the top of Victoria Peak. Try to get seats in the front row to enjoy the spectacle of the steep climb. Once you reach the top, don’t stop with all the other tourists at the lookout point, instead take the path that runs along Lugard Road to enjoy one of the best views of the city at 500 meters high: take as many photos as possible!!
Take the double-decker bus that will take you, along a scenic road, back to Central.
Feeling a bit peckish? It’s time to stop for a dim sum lunch. Head to City Hall, enter and go up to the first floor.
Here you’ll find the Maxim's Palace: a huge, very refined banquet hall, where friendly waitresses walk around the dining room with carts full of dim sum delights. Take a seat and wait for them to pass by. Each cart carries different treats. Make your choice if there’s something you like, or wait for the next one. If you want something that’s not available on the carts, you can order it separately from the menu. The food offered is truly delicious!
To work off your hearty lunch, head towards the Midlevels Escalator: an elaborate system of escalators and moving walkways that connects the Central District with the Western District. At about 800 meters long, it is considered the longest covered outdoor escalator system that transports about 85,000 people every day. At the end of the escalator, you’ll arrive in the Hollywood Road area. Here, take a look at the Tai Kwun complex: a former police station and prison in Hong Kong, now redeveloped into a very fashionable cultural and commercial destination.
To conclude your first day of sightseeing, reach the Man Mo Temple. Take a deep breath and enter. Inside the temple, a thousand incense sticks burn, making the air full of smoke but at the same time magical. Stop to photograph the lanterns wrapped in the "mist" of incense. Take a tour of the temple and, before leaving, take a look at your future with the fortune sticks. These are metal sticks placed inside a jar that you have to shake until one of them comes out. Take it and read the number written on it. Next to it, you’ll find the book with the predictions for the future associated with that number. Mine were excellent: let’s hope they come true!
Return to the hotel and relax a bit, as in the evening you’ll visit the Ladies Market. Here you’ll need to bring out your bargaining skills to complete your purchases of fake products.
