Shurijo Castle

SHURIJO CASTLE

It is actually a complex of several buildings surrounded by stone walls. It features a unique architecture that mixes Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan styles. The castle served at the time as the residence of the rulers and as the religious seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it was destroyed three times during the Ryukyu Kingdom due to fires (in 1453, 1660, and 1709), and then destroyed again in World War II during the Battle of Okinawa, fought between the Japanese army and the Allies. In the postwar period, the castle was restored and until the late seventies it was the site of a public university. The complete restoration of the building was finished in 1992.

The Castle was completely destroyed due to a fire on October 31, 2019.
Luckily, I managed to see it before the fire. I assure you it was truly of rare beauty.
